After 6 years of working on evenings and weekends, David Young's Gentleman's Racer is finally complete. David, now 52, started building boats with his father in the basement of their home, at the age of 14. After working at many boatbuilding companies, over the years, including Windsor Boatworks in Gravenhurst, & the last 9 years at Duke Marine in Port Carling, Ont. David decided in 2003 to build a 20' Gentleman's Racer of his own. Powered by a 350 cu in. Mercruiser 330 HP Fuel Injected "Black Scorpion". This brand new boat is one of a kind, with many personalized upgrades & hardware castings that were first carved from wood by David himself. "A true Muskoka boat". Robert Ludington, founder of Ludington Airlines, commissioned Disturber IV. His Vice President was Amelia Earhart. Aviation was in its infancy and things were booming. Ludington presumably moved on, and a young man who had been born into one of America's wealthiest families bought the boat. The Hazzards were known to have transported the Spirit of St. Louis for Charles Lindberg, and it is said that young Hazzard raced Disturber IV with his friend Lindberg.
In the late 1920s, the young Hazzard was to go down in history and into the common vocabulary of millions of people. Scrambling in the turmoil of the crash of '29, young Hap Hazzard is said to have decimated one of America's greatest family fortunes and doing things in a "haphazard" fashion entered into the lexicon of the twentieth century.
Somehow though, he hung onto Disturber IV using it regularly in the Pacific off the Santa Barbara coast. His daughter Lucille Hazzard, now well into her 70's remembers "aquaplaning" behind the boat as a girl. She says Lindberg did too.
Palm Beach Days is a stunning recreation of a legendary Gold Cup race boat. Every trip on the lake will leave you feeling like you just won the Gold Cup Championship.
This custom designed, hand crafted 38-foot John Hacker design Minett-Shield pleasure craft was built in 1929 and constructed of solid mahogany. It was the pride of the builder and a signature craft featured in many of the companies' promotional material throughout the 1930s. This vessel features a 2-step planing hull capable of attain speeds in excess of 50 MPH. Stepped hull design is considered the fore-running design technology to that of present day racing hydroplanes. Wimur II's innovative design has been imitated in days since but never duplicated, mass produced, nor has it been improved upon to this day. Wimur II is truly a unique one of a kind boat embodying not only stability, speed and comfort, but also embodies the elegance and style of a bygone era.
